Do I need to buy the rental car company's insurance when renting a car on vacation?

I often get asked the question about renting a car and whether or not I should take the insurance when I'm on vacation. The safest answer is to take the rental car company's insurance and disclose all drivers. There are a variety of reasons. A few examples will be this.

Number one: your deductible. If you, if damage happens to the car while you are renting it, you will be immediately responsible for your deductible payable to that rental car company. Does not matter if it's your fault or someone else's fault.

Reason number 2: Insurance will not pay for loss of use. If the if the car is damaged while you have it, the rental car company can turn around and charge you a rental fee for the period of time it takes to get that car repaired.

Number 3: Your insurance only covers you for 30 days or less of a rental period. If you're on extended vacation, this may not be enough.

Where are you matters! If you're not renting a car in the United States or Canada, your insurance will not apply.

Drivers - if you travel with friends, your insurance will never extend to a friend driving a rental car.

And diminished value. This one's sneaky. Rental car companies can turn around and charge you for the diminished value when they resell the vehicle because it had been damaged or wrecked while you had it. This amount can come to thousands of dollars. There's a lot of other reasons as well.

Most of us have never actually read the full rental contract, and for that reason, our agency 100% of the time, recommends that you take the rental car company's insurance and disclose all drivers.
